New Mob 1.8

Notch has released an image of the brand new mob that he has been working on although other than the image no new information has been revealed.
The new mob is seemingly a dark shady stick like person, which can carry blocks. It’s unclear whether the mob will attack players but from their looks, it seems players will have another enemy to deal with.

UPDATE : Thanks to Nyanners and KSMF, respectively, for the following two enhanced images!

Remember earlier this week when Notch teased a new Minecraft mob he was working on for the upcoming Adventure Update? Well, today he spilled the beans about exactly what it does, and it's pretty darn freaky. Dubbed "Endermen," these new lanky, jet-black creatures sound like something ripped straight out of a horror movie.

"Fear is one of the easiest emotions to evoke," write Notch on his blog, "but doing so in a way that doesn't frustrate or fatigue the player is more difficult. I find this fascinating." To that end, he experimented with a few different ways to make his latest mob creation have a strong psychological impact on players.

The Endermen are a dark, ominous mob that will slowly go about their business, moving blocks around the map. They ignore you…until you look directly at them. While you can approach these eerie beasts in close quarters safely, actually putting the mouse reticule on them causes them to stop what they're doing and turn towards you. They'll watch you and remain still as long as you remain continue looking at them. But the second you turn they spring into action, charging at you with great speed and dealing massive damage when they reach you. Running away will only get you so far too, since they'll continue to stalk and pursue you by teleportation.

News On 1.8

Mojang has seen fit to tease us some more with tidbits of info on what they are working on for the 1.8 Minecraft Update. So many excellent things in store! Check out the latest info below:

Most of the basics of the game engine is in place, so it’s time to flesh this game out into something more gamey. More content, more exploration, more things to do, and interesting combat! Once this update is out, there will only some tweaks, optimizations and code cleanups left to the core game before they can call it a full release.
They’ve got a list of some 40+ things we want to add to the game, some small, some big. Some huge. They’ve finished a fair number of the items, but there’s still a significant amount of work left. While he can’t reveal the date yet for various reasons, they do have a release date for the Adventure Update in mind, and they’re hoping we’ll be able to hit it.
Jens and Notch are keeping the exact contents of the update secret, but they do leak some information every now and then to keep people interested and to stop us from going insane. For the most immediate spoilers, you can follow them on Twitter (@notch and @jeb_), or on Google+ (+Markus Persson and +Jens Bergensten).
Here are a few of the things they’ve revealed so far:
  • NPC villages
  • Randomly generated dungeons
  • New biome code
  • Fully working Creative Mode (and individual admins can enter Creative Mode on a Survival Mode server if they choose)
  • Critical hits
  • Sprinting
  • More farming options
As soon as they can reveal the release date they’re aiming for,They will!
Oh, and the modding support is happening, honest. -Source: Notch
